About The Historic Marbold Farmstead

At the Historic Marbold Farmstead, we believe history should be experienced, not just remembered.  Our mission is to preserve the Marbold family homestead as a living example of 19th century farm life in central Illinois – educating, inspiring, and connecting generations through immersive storytelling and preservation.

John H. Marbold’s vision began here in 1851. Today, we continue his legacy.

Our Story

The Marbold Farmstead, built in 1851 by German immigrant John H. Marbold, stood as a beacon of agricultural innovation and community leadership for decades. The farmstead flourished until 1925, when economic hardships took their toll on farmers and businesses alike.

As the economy declined, the local bank failed, forcing the settlement of debts and marking the end of the farmstead’s prosperous era.

In 2012, the Historic Marbold Farmstead Association (HMFA) purchased the property with a bold vision: to restore and revive the site as a place where the past comes alive.

Our People

We are historians, educators, farmers, craftsmen, and community members bound by a shared love for local heritage. Our all-volunteer organization is led by a dedicated board and supported by countless volunteers who contribute time, tools, and talents to bring history to life.

Our dedicated volunteers bring passion and preservation skills to every project.

What We Value

Education, authenticity, and community—these are the values that shape every step of our restoration.

Authenticity

We honor the original integrity of the Farmstead by using period-appropriate
restoration methods.

Education

We believe hands-on, interactive learning fosters a deep appreciation for history.

Community

We rely on local partnerships, events, and outreach to keep the Farmstead an active part of Greenview and Menard County.

Preservation

We protect not only buildings but also stories, practices, and the spirit of the rural 19th century life.

Our Progress

Years of steady progress, powered by community support and a love for history.

Since 2012, we have:

  • Stabilized and restored the main house and multiple outbuildings
  • Hosted historical reenactments, school field trips, and seasonal events
  • Received support from preservation grants and hundreds of community donors

Every nail hammered and brick cleaned is a step closer to full restoration!

We preserve the past so future generations can experience it firsthand.
